Getting a WordPress website built in Chennai: what to ask before you pay

By Boobesh AG, founder of Gari Tech, content marketing agency in Chennai

The short answer: before you pay anyone to build a WordPress website, get answers on scope, ownership, hosting, edits and support. Most website disputes come from something nobody asked at the start. Here are the eight questions I would ask, and the ones I answer as a builder at Gari Tech.

1. What exactly am I getting?

Pages, features, number of revisions, and whether writing and images are included. A vague scope becomes a fight in week three.

2. What will it cost, in total?

Ask for the whole investment: design, development, hosting, domain, plugins and anything that renews every year. A low first price with large add-ons later is a common trap. Clients of ours have said the pricing was explained upfront, and that is the standard I think everyone should ask for.

3. Who owns the website and the domain?

You should. The domain should be registered in your name and you should hold the login. If a developer keeps the domain, you are renting your own address.

4. Where will it be hosted, and who pays?

Hosting affects speed and reliability. Ask where it sits, what it costs per year and how backups work.

5. Will I be able to edit it myself?

This is the one I care about most. A good developer teaches you how to change text, swap images and add a page, so you are not paying every time a phone number changes. One of our clients specifically mentioned being taught how to make basic edits, and it is a handover step I do not skip.

6. Is it built to be found?

Ask about page titles, headings, speed on mobile, and whether the pages have clean addresses. A website nobody can find is an expensive brochure. If you want to read more about how content and websites work together, see what is content marketing.

7. What happens after launch?

Sites need updates and someone to call when something breaks. Ask what support is included and what it costs afterward.

8. Can I see sites you have built?

Ask for live links, not screenshots, and ask whether you can speak to the owner. You can see some of ours on the Gari Tech page and read about them in Gari Tech case studies.

A quick note on Elementor

Many of our sites use WordPress with Elementor, which makes it possible for non developers to edit layouts visually. It is not the only good way to build a site, but it is a sensible choice when the owner wants to keep making changes.

Why WordPress, and when not to use it

WordPress powers a very large share of websites, which means there are many developers, plenty of plugins and a lot of help online. It suits business sites, portfolios, blogs and small stores. It is a good choice when you want to edit your own content and grow the site over time.

It is not always right. A very custom web application, or a site with unusual features, may be better built another way. A good developer will tell you if WordPress is not the right fit rather than sell it to you anyway.

The stages of a website project

  1. Discovery. What the site is for, who visits, and what they should do.
  2. Structure. A list of pages and how they link together.
  3. Content. Your text, photos and details, prepared before the build.
  4. Design and build. The layout, colours and functions.
  5. Review. You test, ask for changes and approve.
  6. Launch. Domain, hosting and going live.
  7. Handover. A walkthrough on how to edit, plus login details in your name.
  8. Support. Updates, backups and someone to call if something breaks.

What to prepare before you start

The single most useful thing you can do is prepare content early. Have ready:

  • A short description of your business and your services.
  • Photos of your work, your team or your place.
  • Your contact details and opening hours.
  • Any testimonials or reviews you can share.
  • Examples of sites you like and why.

Projects slow down most when the content arrives late.

SEO basics for a new website

A new site does not need advanced tricks. It needs the basics done properly.

  • A clear title and heading on each page that says what the page is about.
  • Words on the page that match how customers describe what you do, including your city.
  • Fast loading on a phone.
  • Clean, readable page addresses.
  • A contact page with your details, and a sitemap so search engines can find every page.
  • Internal links between related pages.

Then publish useful content over time, since that is what brings people in. The content marketing strategy post covers how.

Speed and mobile

Most visitors will open your site on a phone. Test it on one. Large uncompressed images are the most common reason a site is slow, so ask how images are handled.

Security and backups

A website needs regular updates and backups. Ask who handles updates for WordPress and plugins, how often backups happen, and how you would recover if something broke. This is unglamorous and it matters.

Ongoing costs

Beyond the build, expect costs for the domain, hosting, and possibly premium plugins or tools, all of which renew. Ask for a list of every recurring cost and when it is due, so there are no surprises later.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a website developer in Chennai?

Ask the eight questions above, look at live sites they built, and speak to a past client if you can. Check who owns the domain and hosting.

Who builds WordPress websites in Chennai?

Many freelancers and agencies do. Gari Tech, a content marketing agency in Chennai, builds WordPress websites and hands them over with a walkthrough.

How long does a WordPress website take to build?

It depends on the number of pages and how quickly you provide content. Ask for a timeline in writing, and expect delays if content is late.

Will I be able to edit my WordPress website myself?

You should be able to. Ask for a walkthrough at handover, and confirm that you hold the admin login.

Is WordPress good for SEO?

It can be, since it lets you control titles, headings, page addresses and content. The results still depend on how the site is built and what you publish.

What is Elementor?

A visual editor for WordPress that lets non developers change layouts. It is a sensible option when the owner wants to keep making changes.

Red flags

  • The developer will not tell you the total cost until after a long call.
  • The domain or hosting is registered in the developer's name.
  • No examples of live sites.
  • A promise to rank first on Google. Nobody can promise that.
