What is content marketing? A plain answer for founders and students
By Boobesh AG, founder of Gari Tech, content marketing agency in Chennai
Content marketing is creating useful things, such as articles, videos, posts and newsletters, that your future customers want to consume, so they trust you before they ever buy. You are paying with information and attention instead of paying for an ad slot.
A simple way to see it
An advert says "buy this". Content says "here is something useful", and the buying decision comes later, once you have earned it.
When I was 15 I sold things online without knowing any of this. I just knew people bought when you said it the right way, and that is content marketing at its smallest.
The main types
- Written: blog articles, LinkedIn posts, newsletters.
- Video: YouTube, Instagram Reels, short clips cut from longer videos.
- Audio: podcasts.
- Visual: posters, carousels, infographics.
- Tools and resources: calculators, templates, checklists.
You do not need all of them. Pick the one your customers already spend time on.
How it differs from other marketing
- Advertising buys attention for as long as you keep paying. Content keeps working after you stop, but starts slowly.
- SEO is about being found on search engines. Content is what you get found with. They are partners, not rivals.
- Social media marketing is running your accounts. Content is what you put on them. The difference is covered in content marketing vs social media marketing.
How it actually works
- A stranger finds something useful you made.
- They come back, or follow you, because it was useful again.
- After a few of these, they know who you are and what you are good at.
- When they need what you sell, you are the obvious name.
The slow part is steps 2 and 3. Most people stop before they get there.
A real example of repurposing
At Your College Senior, the channel has more than 150 videos and around 8,700 subscribers at the time of writing. A big part of my job there is taking one long video and turning it into LinkedIn posts, short clips and a newsletter, so the same idea reaches people in three places without being made three times. That habit, making one idea travel, is worth more than making more ideas.
Why content marketing works
People do not like being sold to, and they do like being helped. When someone helps you before you have paid them, you trust them more, remember them longer and feel a small pull to return the favour. Content marketing turns that ordinary human habit into a business method. It also works with how people now buy: they search, watch and read first, and talk to a salesperson last.
The three stages of the buying journey
Content does a different job at each stage.
- Awareness. The person has a problem but no solution yet. Content here explains the problem in plain words. Think "how to choose a career after 12th" or "why is my website not getting visitors".
- Consideration. They know the solutions exist and are comparing. Content here compares options honestly, gives checklists and answers "how do I choose".
- Decision. They are ready to pick. Content here is proof: case studies, reviews, examples and a clear next step.
Most beginners write only for the decision stage, which is too late. Most people who read you will not be ready to buy yet, and that is fine.
Examples by kind of business
- A counselling centre explains what a first session is like and how confidentiality works.
- A fitness studio shows what a class looks like and answers "I am not fit enough to start".
- A software company publishes tutorials showing how to solve problems, with the product as one option.
- A freelance designer shows before and after work and explains the thinking.
- A student channel shares career advice in short clips, which is close to what Your College Senior does on LinkedIn, YouTube and a newsletter.
The pattern is the same each time: teach something real, and let the trust build.
Content marketing, copywriting and SEO writing
These get mixed up.
- Copywriting is persuasive writing meant to make someone act now, such as an advert or a sales page.
- SEO writing is writing shaped so search engines understand it and match it to what people type.
- Content marketing is the whole approach, deciding what to publish and why. It uses copywriting and SEO writing as tools.
A small glossary
- Content calendar: the plan of what you publish and when.
- Content pillar: a broad theme you return to, such as "myths" or "how-tos".
- Repurposing: turning one piece into several formats.
- Funnel: the path from a stranger to a customer.
- CTA (call to action): the one thing you ask the reader to do next.
- Engagement: replies, saves, shares and comments, as opposed to just views.
- Evergreen content: content that stays useful for a long time.
Common mistakes
- Writing about yourself instead of your customer's problem.
- Publishing in bursts and disappearing.
- Copying what famous creators do without their audience or budget.
- Judging results after two weeks.
- Never asking readers what they want to know.
Frequently asked questions
What is content marketing in simple words?
It is making useful things, such as articles, videos and posts, that people want to read or watch, so they trust you enough to buy from you later.
What are examples of content marketing?
Blog articles, LinkedIn posts, Instagram Reels, YouTube tutorials, newsletters, podcasts, checklists and case studies. Any useful thing you publish to earn attention rather than buy it.
Is content marketing worth it for a small business?
Usually yes, if your customers research before buying. It is slow but cheap compared with paying for every click, and the work keeps paying off after you publish it.
How long does content marketing take to work?
Plan for about three months of consistent publishing before judging. Some signals, like replies and saves, arrive earlier.
What is the difference between content marketing and digital marketing?
Digital marketing is the whole category of online marketing, including ads, SEO, email and social media. Content marketing is one part of it, focused on creating useful material that earns trust.

How to start this week

- Keep the ones that got replies. Make more like them.

How to know if it is working
Look at things that matter to a business: enquiries, bookings, replies, people who mention your content when they contact you. Views and likes are nice, and easy to inflate.
